EISA, BRISMES & BISA CPD Joint Event on Decolonizing Palestine: Hamas between the Anticolonial and the Postcolonial

In Decolonizing Palestine, Somdeep Sen counters the notion that liberation from colonization exists as a singular moment in history when the colonizer is ousted by the colonized. Against the background of the past and present of Israel’s project of settler colonialism that rejects the existence of Palestine (and Palestinian-ness), he considers the case of the Palestinian struggle for liberation from this condition as a complex psychological and empirical mix of the colonial and the postcolonial.

Somdeep Sen is Associate Professor in International Development Studies at Roskilde University, Denmark. His research focuses include settler colonialism with a particular focus on Israel-Palestine, urban politics in South Asia and the Middle East, race and racism in international relations, history of liberation movements and postcolonial studies.

With the growth of new and emerging technologies that not only facilitate and accelerate data generation, analysis and dissemination but also enable new ways of determining risks and recognising threats, the processes that shape knowledge production are shifting and new socio-technological imaginaries of in/security emerge. Against the background of an ever-increasing acceleration of technologies and a normalisation of ‘technical solutions’ to inherently socio-political problems, this workshop discusses the interplay of knowledge and technologies that construct in/security on a range of issues – from cybersecurity to financial market collapse and conflict prevention. The workshop, convened by Lilly Pijnenburg Muller (King’s College) and Johanna Rodehau-Noack (LSE), especially invites contributions that put International Relations theory and Science and Technology Studies into conversation on the topic of researching knowledge production on security risks and threats.

EISA will organize a virtual conference with the theme – “Knowledge Practices and Academic Community: Keeping the Fire Going in the times of Corona”.

Over three days in early September, we’ll ‘meet’ in the virtual shadows of our annual Pan-European Conference to think, discuss, share, engage, speak up, support, act and enact our ideas of new knowledge practices and academic community in the times of COVID19.

Are you preparing a grant proposal, a special issue, an edited book, or setting up a new research network? The EISA Exploratory Symposia offers an excellent opportunity to meet in smaller groups to pursue collaborative work over three days. In 2019, EISA will host its 8^th Exploratory Symposia for members in the town of Rapallo on the Portofino Coast in Italy.

University of Sofia, Sofia, Bulgaria / The 13th Pan-European Conference on International Relations (PEC) invites the International Studies community to envision what the discipline has seen and what has remained out of its sight.

The Olympia Summer Academy (OSA), which as of 2014 is co-organized with the EISA, offers annually a wide range of specialized courses in Politics and International Studies. Since its establishment in 2002, the OSA has acquired a stellar reputation.

The event is organised in partnership with the Polish Association for International Studies and the City of Kraków.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended this year’s Pan-European Conference in International Relations, co-hosted by EISA and CEEISA, at the University of Economics (VŠE) in Prague. We are delighted that so many of you joined us from across Europe and the world and we hope that you all found the conference, the wonderful facilities provided by our generous hosts at VŠE, and the beautiful city of Prague as enriching and enjoyable as we did.
