In Memoriam: Andrew Linklater

13. 3. 2023

All of us at the European International Studies Association are saddened by the news that Professor Andrew Linklater has passed away. He was central to all major debates within International Relations seeking to understand how we might enlarge our ideas of civilization whilst also respecting difference. He was instrumental in reviving the English School as a distinct paradigm within IR and demonstrating how engagements with sociology (particularly the work of Norbert Elias) enlarge the discipline’s capacity to grapple with the most challenging questions of global order and justice.

Andrew shaped the lives of many students and scholars who had the good fortune to work with him. He was endlessly patient (especially with PhD students), deeply committed to the task of making good arguments, and genuinely open to different points of view. He brought kindness to every endeavour and enlivened us with his crafty sense of humour. The EISA community will miss Andrew’s intellectual generosity, his conceptual ambition and his powerful encouragements. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, students and colleagues.
