Practices, power and sustainability at academic conferences

ZOOM EVENT: THURSDAY, 27 AUGUST 2026, 17:00 – 18:00 CET

Description

Conferences are where we build networks, test ideas, and advance careers. They’re also spaces where choices shape who participates and can engage in our scholarly community, e.g. how sessions are structured, speaking time gets allocated and managed, what support there is for early-career and precarious researchers. This session brings together reflections on what makes conferences work as sustainable, equitable, and inspiring spaces.

We will discuss EISA’s new Code of Conduct, and the local organisers offer reflections on conference planning. There is also space for the audience to share experiences and ideas. What practices have you seen work? What barriers do you encounter?

Chair:

  • Revecca Pedri, University of Macedonia and EISA board member

Participants

  • Ana Mónica Rola da Fonseca, Director of Iscte Center for International Studies and local organizer for PEC 2026
  • Laura Horn, Portfolio holder Academic Values and Sustainability in the EISA board
