Early Career Researchers Workshops for PhD students and post-docts

Sofia, 10 September 2019

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Deadline for applications: 10 December 2018

The European International Studies Association (EISA) is inviting proposals for Early Career Researchers Workshops (ECW) as part of the next EISA Pan-European Conference in Sofia (11-14 September 2019). The workshops will be held on 10 September 2019, prior to the main conference. ECWs are one-day workshops organized by and for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who finished their PhD less than three years prior to the application deadline. Eight to twelve participants use the workshop to present and discuss their work. The workshop can also include one or two senior discussants. Organized around an overarching theme or question, the workshops can be used for several purposes, including gaining experience in academic conference presentation, developing new ideas, building up a research proposal, and/or preparing publications. We also encourage applicants to think creatively about the workshop format. The guidelines for proposals are included below.

EISA will provide funding for up to three ECWs. Financial support covers up to €4000 for each workshop. Funding is primarily for covering travel and additional accommodation costs of participants. Workshop conveners will receive the ECW grant as a lump sum. They will need to provide an account statement and receipts for workshop expenditures within three weeks after the event.

The Workshops have been a great success at previous EISA Pan-European Conferences. We are looking forward to receiving proposals on any research area in International Relations. If you need further information, please feel free to contact the Director of ECWs Jef Huysmans on jef.huysmans@qmul.ac.uk, using EISA ECW in subject heading.

Instructions for applicants:

Only proposals including all of the following will be accepted:

  1. Names and contact details of applicants
  2. Title of the workshop
  3. Up to 500 words description of workshop, including its aims, description of the research question or theme, and the relevance of the topic in light of contemporary issues and debates in International Relations.
  4. Up to one-page outline of the structure of the workshop – i.e. organization of presentations, format of discussion, and so on.
  5. A list of up to 6 already committed participants, including names and affiliations
  6. Confirming intention of circulating call for papers and indication of which channels will be used to recruit extra participants beyond the core group submitted
  7. Indicative list of senior discussants if they are included in the workshop format
  8. An outline of the budget; include if there is possibility of co-funding should the application be successful.

Submit applications to: jef.huysmans@qmul.ac.uk — using EISA ECW PROPOSAL in subject heading

The deadline for application is 10 December 2018.

The ECW Committee will evaluate applications. Applicants will be contacted about the decision by early 2019.

Note:

  • ECW applicants do not need to be members of EISA for their application to be considered. However, when the ECW application is accepted participants are expected to be or become members of EISA. Funding is mainly for members of EISA.
  • ECWs are part of PEC. Participants therefore need to register for the Conference.
