Associate and/or Full Professorships in International Relations

We invite applications for an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The positions are available from 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications are sought from eminent candidates who can enhance the Department’s research, education and societal impact within the field of International Relations (including, but not limited to security studies, gender, diplomacy, war, post-colonialism, international political sociology and political economy).

Within IR, the Department also seeks to strengthen its research in global environmental politics (including, but not limited to research on climate change, biodiversity, and/or pollution). At least one of the positions will be allotted to that specialization.

Research and teaching in the Department, including in the IR research group is methodologically and theoretically diverse, and we expect candidates to be able and willing to engage in intellectual exchanges across a range of IR theories and topics within the discipline.

Job Description                

General duties attached to the position as Associate Professor are:

  • Outstanding quality research within the field of International Relations, or outstanding quality research specializing on global environmental politics (for at least one of the positions)
  • High quality teaching, supervision and examination of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Administrative tasks related to the position as Associate Professor
  • Knowledge sharing with the wider society (societal impact)
  • Contribution to the social and intellectual life of the Department
  • Contribution to external grant applications within his or her specialist area

  • Outstanding research within the field of International Relations, or outstanding research specializing on global environmental politics
  • High quality teaching, supervision and examination of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students
  • Administrative tasks related to the position as Full Professor
  • Knowledge exchange with the wider society (societal impact)
  • Active contribution to the social and intellectual life of the Department
  • External funding within his or her specialist area
  • Research and teaching management

 

Qualifications

For both positions, we expect candidates to present a clear, well-developed and viable strategy for future outstanding research that will result in further world-leading publications, external research funding as well as a commitment to innovate teaching. We expect successful candidates at Associate Professor level and Full Professor level to engage in cooperation and initiatives (e.g. continuing and professional education) within the Faculty of Social Sciences and beyond.

All applicants must have a PhD in Political Science or equivalent academic qualifications.

 

For the Associate Professor position, applicants must have:

  • An aspiration to increase our understanding of the world and its problems based on a proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced in a growing and ambitious publication profile that complements the existing research strengths of the Department and evidence of, or clear plans for attracting, external research funding.
  • A commitment to contribute to the delivery of an excellent student learning experience based on a sizable track record of excellence in teaching in one or more of the main areas covered by the Department. The Department prefers candidates who can cover more than one of the main courses taught at BSc level.
  • An engagement in knowledge exchange and policy-impact in an international context and in Denmark. We encourage proactive engagement with government, business and community partners to enhance the impact of research and education and improve the employability of our students.
  • Robust interpersonal skills, which enable the candidate to be a constructive and empathic colleague in a diverse and vibrant working environment.

 

Applicants for a Full Professorship must be able to document a very high degree of original scholarly production at international level and have a highly recognised international reputation. Furthermore, applicants must have:

  • An aspiration to increase our understanding of the world and its problems based on a proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced by a recognized international reputation within the field, and demonstrated by a considerable number of existing high-quality publications, which constitute a significant contribution to the field and complements the existing research strengths of the Department. Publications should be published on a continuous basis in top-ranked journals and/or a highly influential publication record with leading book publishers.
  • A commitment to contribute to the delivery and further development of an excellent student learning experience based on a significant track record of excellence in teaching in one or more of the main areas covered by the Department. The Department prefers candidates, who can cover more than one of the main courses taught at BSc level.
  • An engagement in knowledge exchange and policy-impact in Denmark, the Nordic region as well as in an international context. We encourage proactive engagement with government, business and community partners to enhance the impact of research and education and improve the employability of our students.
  • Proven ability to lead research groups and teams, as well as an ability to operate in leadership roles at the Departmental, Faculty and University levels.
  • Proven ability and willingness to attract external funding on a larger scale for her-/himself as well as for (less senior) colleagues, and to lead international projects.
  • Robust interpersonal skills, which enable the candidate to be a constructive and empathic colleague in a diverse and vibrant working environment.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in inter-disciplinary cooperation within research and teaching

 

The Department

The Department is a top-ranked European Political Science department, which offers a vibrant and collegial working environment for ambitious scholars. The pluralism of Political Science in Copenhagen is evidenced in the various epistemological and methodological approaches as well as a wide-range of sub-fields adopted by faculty, as reflected in a wide range of core subjects in the MSc programme. The Department is located on an attractive, historic campus in central Copenhagen – a city continuously voted as one of the best European capitals to live in. Located in a capital, the Department has a strong tradition for engagement in policy development and impact, and in public debates – in Denmark as well as on the European policy-scene.

The Department has 2,200 students (1,800 in its BSc and MSc programs in Political Science, 200 in the BSc and MSc programs in Social Studies, 100 in the MSc program in Security Risk Management), and is one of the founders and an active contributor to the MSc programme in social data science. Furthermore, the department welcomes annually approximately 200 exchange and guest students from abroad.

Conditions of employment – Associate Professorship

Appointment as Associate Professor is a permanent position at the Department of Political Science. Terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The annual salary as Associate Professor is currently DKK 477,700. In addition to the salary paid directly to you, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to the pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of your salary. Conditions of employment - Professorship
