Maria Raquel Freire, Jean Monnet Chair, is Associate Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the same University, in Portugal. She is currently director of the PhD Programme in International Politics and Conflict Resolution, CES|FEUC; and Head of the International Relations Department at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra. She is also a member of the Scientific Council for Social Sciences and Humanities of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Her research interests focus on peace studies, particularly peacekeeping and peacebuilding; foreign policy, international security, Russia and the post-Soviet space. She has been publishing widely on these topics.
